Follow Friday: Geek Dad & Geek Mom

Since it has been so long since I've offered up a Follow Friday and these two fit so well together, I'll give you a two for one deal.

I am not a parent, but I am a geek with a special interest in children's media. These two blogs are a perfect fit for me because they are intended for geeks who are immersed in children's media.

From Geek Dad

I discovered Geek Dad just after grad school and I've been an avid reader ever since. It is a great resource for updates and reviews of gadgets, games, comics, movies, books and Phineas and Ferb!

I confess, I was leery of Geek Mom when it started. It is a spin off from Geek Dad and my initial thoughts were that separate is inherently not equal.  Women were posting on Geek Dad for as long as I had been reading, so I didn't really find Geek Mom necessary. Geek Mom seems to have some extra parenting tips, education related discussion, and healthy food ideas, but overall it is just more great information. There is a little bit of cross posting with Geek Dad, but they do a great job of organizing theme topics without having overlap redundancy.

Lucky

Despite the lack of knitting, it has been a pretty great summer. It has been full of friends, games and lazy days in the park. I've discovered this summer that I am the luckiest girl. I have two bits of fun evidence to share.

First, Hubby took me to see An American Tale at Brooklyn Bridge Park. It was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I even had an amazing Fievel doll. The movie was as wonderful as I remember (which is lucky on its own) but the really fantastic part was the credits. There was a surprise fireworks show!

 Second, a couple weekends ago we went to see Being Elmo at IFC. We were in a intimate screening room and I loved the film. Again during the credits I got a big surprise. Several of the people who worked on creating the film were available for Q&A. Not only did I get to meet the director but Kevin Clash was a special guest. Here I am with Kevin and Tau

I haven't been writing very much this summer. The sad thing is that I haven't been doing much knitting either. I do have a very cute and colorful video to share.

Unfortunately I do have some disappointment from one of the vendors. I bought myself a purse from Holly Hue and after just two weeks it fell apart. Other than that issue I was really impressed with what I saw I am going to have to head back next year. I'll also be coming back to this list to do some of my own shopping in the near future. 

Hello Again

Where did June go? Last time I checked it was May and I was headed down to Disney World to park hop with my girlfriend and to introduce my favorite family to Mickey Mouse. Now it is the end of June and I feel like I am just starting to recover from a whirlwind of fun. I've had friends visit and I've been playing all over the city. I do have some exciting stuff to share and catch up with. You should look forward to:

I became a fan of Felicia Day watching The Guild. I WoWed and I related to her jokes. (I have to admit I love that she's a red head too.) It wasn't until a year later that I saw Dr. Horrible and became a devoted fan. She's continued to be involved in projects that really interest me so I am happy to continue following her. I'm looking forward to sitting down and working my way through Eureka and I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy Dragon Age Redemption when it is available.

Flying way up there

So I've been neglecting the blogging for a bit. I am putting the final touches on the secret knitting project. I've taken all the pictures and the reveal is almost here. I think by the end of the week I should be able to share. In the meantime, while I finish sorting out these details I have a video for you. 

I've confessed this before, but I'll tell you again. When I was little I use to think that the reason I never saw moths during the day was because they were all flying toward the sun. It made sense to me. They follow the lights at night, why not during the day. I am proud to announce that I wasn't all that wrong! Today was a bit overcast, but Hubby and I went out to take pictures at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. I'm quickly deciding this is one of my favorite places on earth. I see something new and beautiful every time we go. Today, I fell in love with this lilac bush:

Hiya. I'm Jen. You might know me from my other blog, Cake Wrecks.

In the past I've been a Jungle Cruise skipper, a cash office accountant, a children's book inventory expediter, a house painter, and a clown - not necessarily in that order. Today I'm a blogger, which is kind of like "clown" and "expediter" mashed together. And from the beginning, I've always been a geek.

Epbot is where I share the things I like, the things that make me laugh, and the things that I'm working on. If it's sci-fi, steampunk, clever, crafty, or cute, I probably love it.

I talked about my love for Jen and her Cake Wrecks team. Epbot is where Jen unwinds and shares all of her non-cakey interests. Cake Wrecks led me to believe that Jen is an entertaining humorist. Epbot has be convinced that she is my long lost BFF. She matches my Disney fandom and general geekery. I my (completely not creepy at all) fantasy world we'd be be neighbors. I'd teach her to knit, and she's lend me steampunk books and we would have regular squee fests playing games and watching movies. Sadly my (completely not creepy at all) fantasy world doesn't exist, I just lurk on her blog and pretend that everything she writes is something she is sharing specially for me (which admittedly does seem a little creepy...) Follow Friday: Cake Wrecks

What's A Wreck:
A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

I confess, I've made and I've bought my share of wrecks. Jen and her team crack me up every day with wrecky mistakes. You could laugh yourself to tears just looking at the photos in each post, but I promise reoccurring giggle fits throughout the day if you read along. (Though sometimes, you'll need to sing along for full effect.)

Amazingly enough, this site has almost completely overcome my sweet tooth and ended all of my cake cravings. Throughout the week, the wrecks are unappealing enough, that I have no desire to eat most of them. On Sunday's the sweets are far too incredible to eat. I couldn't bear to cut into a single one. The best and the worst are all here, and thanks to Jen, I appreciate my local bakers like never before.
